Motcube Contest!

December 21st, 2006

sodabotI throughly enjoyed competeing in the NXTasy.org Challenge last month, and was looking forward to the next one.  Unfortunatly they appear to have given up on the challenge thing.  Therefore we're looking into running our own contest this winter!  The details are still being worked out, so I thought we'd put up a preivew of them to get some feedback.  The idea for this contest is to make a bot that can pick up a soda can, traverse an obstical course, and place the can within a designated area.  The bot must then return and pick up another can, and bring it back, doing this a total of six times.  Read on to see the full details!  (picture is from a Dutch website of a soda carrying bot.)

Where to get Legos

December 19th, 2006

legosSo, you got your Lego Mindstorms NXT a few weeks ago and have had all sorts of fun building Spike, Alpha Rex, and the Tribot.  You've even built a few things on your own.  But now you've got a great idea for a new project, perhaps a robotic squirrel, or maybe a giant catapult. Only one problem, you don't have enough Legos to complete your project.  What do you do?  Well you've got a few options, if you're like me you'll spend a few minutes cursing having given away all your old Legos from when you were a kid, and then start looking at places to buy new ones from.  Fortunately (or perhaps unfortunately depending on your perspective) there are a slew of places to get both new and used Legos, but how to choose where?  Well in this article I'll go into all the various places I've found to buy Legos from, as well as some of the pro's and con's of each.  Read on to get all the juicy tidbits.

New Beta of NBC

December 13th, 2006

nbcThe Bricxcc folks have released a new version of NBC, 1.0.1.b13 beta.  The new version adds more support for Not eXactly C (NXC).  Adding a couple new loops, support for an NBC block, as well as enabling the use of single statements.  In previous releases all variables had to be initilized before the first task, now they can be declared anywhere as long as it isn't inside a task or subroutine.  Lastly a slew of new API's have been added mostly involving the sensors or motors, as well as the ability to play sounds.  Check out all the info over at NBC

Hassenplug’s Package Bot

December 12th, 2006

hassenpackageSteve Hassenplug of Team Hassenplug fame was recently contacted by Lego to build a little NXT bot that would appear on a talk show.  No word on which talk show it will be on/was on however Steve posted the bot over on the NXT Log  Its not the most exciting bot in the world, but I found it quite amusing, particularly the "radar" dish that "which makes the whole thing look more like a robot."  It also points out a few intresting tidbits for bulletproofing your bot so that someone else can use it.  Check out all the info over at the NXT Log

ASIMO Falls down, goes boom.

If your frustrated trying to make a Lego biped take comfort in the fact that Honda has spent millions of dollars, and 20 years of research trying to make a robot that can walk like a human, and on occasion it still falls down and breaks its face.  It looks like the right knee failed in this short clip.

Biped Beta Walking video

December 8th, 2006

{youtube}94eX4Lqj51o{/youtube} My second crack at a walking Biped can be seen here.  Here's the video of it walking along.  It walks reasonably well, however it does tend to curve to one side.  I think this is due to the center of gravity not being in the center of the bot..  After the jump is another video of the bot "dancing"

Shelver pics

December 7th, 2006

shelverSome still pictures to go with the video of the Shelver I put up the other day.  Keep in mind this was just a prototype and there is lots of room for improvment in it.  For instance I attached the lift itself to the string by clamping it inbetween two bushings.  This was obviously not ideal and broke loose numerous times.

You can check out all the various pictures in the gallery!

Shelver

December 6th, 2006

{youtube}KQVqzt87XV4{/youtube} A post over at the nxtasy.org forums inspired me to creat this little bot.  The poster was trying to make a vertical lift/elevator/shelver type bot and was having difficulty using a gear setup.  I think this solution would work a bit better, it uses a pair of pulleys with a loop of string in between them.  This allows for much smoother movement, and is a simpler system, as well as requiring less parts.  The only problem with this system is the string slipping on the pulleys.  This is easily solved by using a double pulley on the drive side, with the string looped twice around it.
